Philemon: A Picture of a Beautiful and Heavenly Church Life

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Philemon is one of the shortest books in the Bible, yet it is also a very sweet book, and one that is rich in the experiences of the practical church life.

It is simply a letter from the aged, imprisoned apostle Paul to a dear brother in the Lord, Philemon. In it, Paul speaks to Philemon concerning Onesimus, a slave of Philemon’s who had run away from him. Onesimus had gone to Paul in Rome, and had been saved through him. Now Paul was sending him back to Philemon, “no longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother” (v. 6).

This book was the subject of the 2011 Vision Week. During this time we saw that we can learn much from this letter concerning both our Christian life and our church life. The saints Paul mentions in this brief letter, the manner in which he addresses Philemon, and the way in which he cares for Onesimus, help us not in the way of teaching, but by way of experience and example. Audio Excerpts: “Christ and the Local Churches”

Friday, September 4th, 2009

These excerpts are from the 2009 Labor Day weekend conference in Troy, Michigan.

This conference was a further development of what brother Titus had shared in the summer training of that year on “Seeing Christ and the Churches.” It consisted of five messages, and was based, especially in the first two messages, on the Lord’s word in Matthew 13:45-46:

Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant seeking fine pearls; and finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Conference: Reconsidering the Church in Antioch

Monday, January 1st, 2007

And when he found Paul, Barnabas brought him to Antioch. And it happened with them that for a whole year they were gathered in the church and taught a considerable number and that the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
— Acts 11:26

While we may appreciate the wonderful experience of the church in Jerusalem as recorded in the first few chapters of Acts, it is the church in Antioch, and not the church in Jerusalem, that is the pattern of a healthy church life today. (more…)

Monday, September 5th, 2005

Open Homes for the Lord’s Testimony

Tuesday, January 1st, 2002

Read this article in PDF formatAccording to 2 Corinthians 1:20-21, for God to be glorified requires God Himself, the saints, and Christ. The Mixed Multitude in Numbers 11

Tuesday, January 1st, 2002

Read this article in PDF formatGod’s calling is always an individual matter. However, if the church life becomes a movement, this will cause ones to come in among us who have never received such a calling. Such a “mixed multitude” can affect the entire church life in a very negative way and even cause the church life to fail.

The Healthy Constitution of a Blessed Church

Tuesday, January 1st, 1980

Read this article in PDF formatThe Epistle to Philemon is a very sweet one, concerning how to have a blessed church life in a certain locality. This Epistle talks about four constituents in a healthy church: the experienced brother “Philemon,” the serving “Apphia,” the fighting “Archippus,” and the saints in that locality.

Excerpt:

A “Philemon” in the church is not only firm, but also has commitment. Because of his firmness, and under his leading, saints will not be anxious for the increase of number or the spiritual ups-and-downs when they are serving. Also, because of his commitment, his presence there brings the steady growth in every aspect of the whole church. Today in the church life we have to learn to be a Philemon, putting ourselves completely into laboring, fighting desperately for the Lord’s testimony in our locality, and becoming the firm strength for the saints.

Note: The date and source of this article are not known. (more…)
