John’s Three Statements on Who God Is

Although we love Jesus Christ and God, very few understand who God really is. However, the apostle John has three unique and very clear statements concerning who God is in Himself.

First, God is Spirit (John 4:24) so our entire Christian life, including our love for the Lord Jesus, must be a matter of the Spirit. Second, God is love (1 John 4:8, 16), so if we truly have the Spirit, we should also have love; if we claim to have the Spirit but do not have love, it shows that our experience of the Spirit is not normal. It is through the Spirit that God pours out His love in our hearts (Rom. 5:5). Finally, God is light (1 John 1:5), so if we receive God as Spirit and enjoy Him as love, we will surely express Him as light.
